Class Reflections
Oceanography/Geology
Initial Reflection
Current Knowledge:
I wouldn't say I am fluent in Oceanography or Geology, but I have taken similar classes before, and I have spent time outside of school learning about these subjects. With all that said, I believe I am competent enough to know when to ooh and aah and nod my head at appropriate moments.
Learning Outcomes:
For Oceanography I am comfortable with and understand all of the learning outcomes, but I would love to learn (more accurately relearn) more specific information such as the specific names for different weather systems and important currents.
Goals for the Class:
My goal for this class is to gain a more in-depth education on the oceans, their systems and their formations as well as relearn some of the information that went in one ear and out the other during my time in APES.

Introduction
Hello everyone, my name is Zack Bailey and I am majoring in architecture. I am taking both Oceanography, because I’d like to learn more on the topic and Geology because I enjoyed learning about it during my AP Environmental Science class in High School and I would like both a refresher and to learn more about the subject. Currently I would say I have a decent grasp on Geology, especially on plate tectonics, its effects on weather and how local climates change over time due to their movement as this was a major and broad point which was covered in APES. When it comes to Oceanography I know about the different “surface” structures in the ocean, how beaches form/coastline structures are formed/eroded away and I understand the oceans circulatory system but I feel that I lack more broad information, rather I’ve learned based on informational bullet points.
Goals
My goal for these classes is to gain a more in depth understanding of the subjects and in hopes of completing them I plan to complete my assignments on time and be present for as many class periods as possible in order to make the most of my time in these classes. Over the past few weeks I think I have done fairly well on the latter half of my plan, I’ve only missed one class period, however the former half of my plan has not gone quite as well. I have completed quite a few of the assignments on time but not all of them and I have several missing and several still need to be resubmitted.
Methods and Review
When it comes to a grade I would personally give myself a C or D currently. I’ve done well on the tests and most of the assignments have went well but the missing and resubmit assignments are also starting to pile up. I think my weakest point is working on too many of assignments at once especially with the missing assignments as a few have blended together with work I have turned due to me working on them at the same time, I need to work on each assignment individually rather than 3 or 4 in the same night as that should help me both do better when it comes to answering questions (leading to fewer resubmits) and be a major contributor to getting all of them turned in on time rather than thinking I turned them in and finding out the opposite a week later. I’ve already started doing this for my other classes and I’ve started going through the resubmits. My new additional goal is to both implement this change for oceanography and Geology and reduce the number of resubmit assignments to zero over the next two weeks.

Other
Finally for my “other” section, I would like to work with both of my groups in oceanography and geology on improving (and lengthening) the reflection page on my portfolio, I find that while it looks like I am hitting all the major points the paper itself does not really match the intended article length that is needed nor does it have the depth of information for the background section that while I feel is needed I don’t know what to add that would be both important and worth reading. This being my fourth attempt, it’s okay and far better than what was on my Eportfolio, but I hope to bring it more in line with what the reflection is supposed to be, ie: 6-7 pages single spaced with a full page dedicated to each section.
Thank you for reading.

Abstract
This semester went fairly well, a few issues with staying on top of turning assignments in but as far as learning and participating in class went I would say the semester was a good one. I enjoyed coming to class and my classmates were fun so the classroom environment was great, I never really felt bored or dreaded coming to class. As for my goals, I feel I succeeded with my second goal, attending class and making good use of my time, but failed my first which was turning all of my assignments in on time.

Methods and Review
When it comes to a grade I would personally give myself a C or B currently. I’ve done well on the tests and most of the assignments have went well but the missing and resubmit assignments were rather excessive. In addition I should have made an effort to dispute missing work earlier and checked in on assignments I never got back so I could redo them for resubmit credit. I’ve already started doing this for my other classes and I’ve started going through the resubmits. My new additional goal is to both implement this change for oceanography and Geology and reduce the number of resubmit assignments to zero over the next two weeks.
Results
This semester went pretty well and the overall grade for both classes would be a B. I feel I learned quite a lot over the course of this semester in both oceanography and geology and enjoyed coming to class. The work was never boring and it was always fun to participate in class discussions. I think the hardest section out of the two classes was learning the names of rocks and minerals, not only identifying them but simply trying to learn how to spell their names. Overall my involvement and engagement in class was fine, I turned in about half the assignments, I was present all but three days (technically two and a half) and I would say that I am proficient in the topics we learned in class and in a few cases at a level where I could confidently teach them.
Other
Finally I would add that a more in depth overview of the final should be provided and perhaps an “assignment” where we could post questions about or ask for sections on our portfolios to be reviewed or reviewed again to help avoid some of the stress of not knowing what is expect while creating last minute final reflections that I am sure are being written at twelve PM tonight, for those who have read this far thank you and I hope you got at least a couple hours of sleep last night.
Thank you for reading.
